Currie Barracks is a 120-acre redevelopment of a former Canadian air base that creates a university village for Mount Royal University just south of downtown Calgary, Alberta. The project scope included redevelopment of the airbase, making walkable former high-speed arterials, BRT transit planning, and a new interchange along a regional limited service highway. The mixed-use district includes shared programs with the university, mixed-income housing, retail, class A office and labs, and an interconnected park system. The planning process leveraged significant public engagement, a form-base code to regulate the project buildout, design guidelines, and a deep dive branding and storytelling initiative. The plan won a 2016 Congress for New Urbanism (CNU) Charter Award, is one of the first accredited LEED-ND developments, and is currently under development.
