A COMMUNITY-DRIVEN MASTER PLAN FOR CINCINNATI’S WALNUT HILLS

The former Kroger grocery store site in Cincinnati’s Walnut Hills has historically been a central gathering spot for the neighborhood. It is critical that the redevelopment of this site fits into and represents the diversity and history of the community, while still looking forward. Yard & Company was brought on by the project developer, Model Group, to develop its master plan. With a focus on retail, public space and housing, this planning process prioritized a robust engagement effort that reached a broad cross section of the community. A personality test was created and used to help community members articulate the future personality they hope to see emerge throughout the redevelopment of this site. The resulting master plan depicts an appropriately active type of place, providing an assortment of daytime activities and services within a welcoming, expressive space. The plan received formal support by the Walnut Hills community and began construction in 2022.
