TRANSFORMING A DOWNTOWN’S GATEWAY TO HONOR THE PAST AND INSPIRE FUTURE GROWTH
The Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum has engaged Yard & Co. to transform 6th Street, the Memorial’s primary gateway, for the 30th anniversary of the Oklahoma City bombing. As the entrance for over 500,000 annual visitors, this corridor shapes first impressions of the Memorial’s message of resilience, remembrance, and hope.
In partnership with the City of Oklahoma City and Downtown Oklahoma City, Yard & Co. is enhancing wayfinding, signage, and the underpass experience. A dynamic light and art installation, inspired by the theme, A Day of Darkness. Years of Light, will symbolize Oklahoma City’s journey from tragedy to hope, with gradient lighting that brightens as visitors approach.
This project not only improves accessibility but also deepens connections to the Memorial and its message. As visitors pass through, they will be reminded to “Be the Light,” ensuring an impactful and meaningful arrival.

PROBLEM
As the Memorial’s main entrance to their site, and the busiest entrance into downtown Oklahoma City, the street was in desperate need of attention and beautification.
SOLUTION
Yard created a concept that celebrated not only how far the city has come since the bombing in 1995, but something that the city could use as a catalyst for future growth over the next 30 years.
ACTION
In just months, Yard united stakeholders to transform the corridor ahead of the Memorial’s April anniversary. Streetscape updates, lighting, artwork, and signage create a new gateway to downtown and the Memorial.
