ACTIVATING A FORMER COMMUNITY SPACE WITH DESIGN, DEVELOPMENT, AND COMMUNITY OWNERSHIP

On behalf of the Carthage Civic League, Yard & Co. was engaged to facilitate a master planning process for the two vacant lots at the intersection of Fairpark Ave and W. Seymour Ave, the former sites of the St. Charles Borromeo Church and School.

The project involved working with residents and stakeholders to design a mixed-use community gathering space and chart a path forward for implementation. This included establishing a vision for the space that reflected the needs and desires of the community, as well as developing a practical plan for bringing that vision to life.

In addition to the schematic design for the space, Yard established the site design principles, a plan for community engagement, and an implementation plan spanning 2024-2026, ensuring a phased approach to development and allowing for flexibility as the project progresses. The process also included considerations for funding, long-term management, and brand identity for the future Carthage Commons.
