THE 10TH STREET TRANSFORMATION: POCKET NEIGHBORHOODS AS CATALYSTS FOR DOWNTOWN REVITALIZATION
New investments in downtown Jeffersonville, Indiana, coupled with a new interchange at its urban fringe has begun to stress the antiquated mid-century, 5-mile commercial corridor of 10th Street. Vacancy has skyrocketed, properties are underwater, and a new proposal for a comprehensive reconstruction of the roadbed necessitate a strategic look at the corridor’s development future. Add-ons and modifications to the current street design were proposed to strengthen its ability to support walkability and real estate investment. High-priority sites for infill and redevelopment helped focus City reinvestment efforts and the framework for a corridor-specific community redevelopment corporation was established to assist in the implementation.
